D.I.K & Zhob Flights
Karachi, 05 January, 2010:PIA has started a new domestic flight for the people of remote areas of Frontier and Balochistan which would facilitate them in traveling to the Business City of Karachi and the Federal Capital Islamabad. PIA Spokesman said here on Tuesday.
The ATR flight will take off from Islamabad on Mondays via Peshawar reach Dera Ismail Khan for onwards journey to Zhob, Quetta and culminate at Karachi. On Fridays the flight will start from Karachi via Quetta, Zhob, D.I. Khan, Peshawar and terminate at Islamabad.
The inaugural flight started from Islamabad on Monday morning with Deputy Speaker National Assembly Mr. Faisal Karim Kundi, Managing Director PIA, Capt Aijaz Haroon and other PIA officials on board along with 28 passengers arrived at Dera Ismail Khan at 1.10 PM.
MD PIA Capt. Aijaz Haroon traveled to Dera Ismail Khan on special invitation by Mr. Kundi. Reaching Dera Ismail Khan, the people of the area assembled at the airport gave rousing welcome to the deputy speaker National Assembly and Managing Director PIA.
During the stop over at the DIK airport a public meeting was held. Speaking on the occasion Mr. Faisal Karim Kundi, Dy. Speaker NA said that the reopening of the DIK airport after seven years has been done by the democratically elected peoples government on the demand of the residents of the region.
He said that the Government was fully conscious of the needs of the people of the deprived areas of Frontier and Balochistan. PIA’s flight to Zhob is also part of PM’s package for Balochistan.
The Deputy Speaker National Assembly appreciated the Managing Director PIA for coming to D.I. Khan and starting the new flight. He requested the Managing Director PIA to increase the frequency of the domestic flight and also plan international flights to Middle East and UAE.
The notables of the area presented the traditional Turban (Pugree) to the Deputy Speaker and Managing Director PIA.
Capt. Aijaz Haroon addressing the public meeting assured the people of the region that due to the efforts and motivation of Mr. Kundi, PIA has started this flight and would be increasing the domestic frequency by March next.
He said that PIA can at the moment operate flights to D.I. Khan with small ATR aircraft while the bigger plane of Boeing and Airbus may only land at D.I. Khan after the runway has been extended for landings. He said that PIA has already conducted a detailed marketing survey of the region for international flights for D.I. Khan and the good news is that there is a great potential for international flights from D.I. Khan.
He said according to our survey about 500 thousand Pakistanis expatriates belonging to D.I. Khan, Bhakkar, Layya, Jhang, Mianwali, Qila Saifullah, Darya Khan, South Waziristan, Miranshah, Meer Ali and Chashma visit their native homes once or after two years to meet their families through different means of transportation. PIA would be keen on facilitating them through International flights as soon as the airport was ready for meeting the standard and requirements for operating international flights.
The MD PIA quoted the example the Sialkot airport which has the finest and longest air strip for the landing of Jumbos and Boeing 777’s which has being built by private sector Trade and Industry. The people of D.I. Khan should also follow the example and through their own resources extend the Runway of D.I. Khan airport.
After the public meeting MD PIA continued his journey on the inaugural flight to Zhob, Quetta and reached Karachi.
